| The Cheboygan Werner
Lightning squirts earned the runner-up championship trophy in the Battle
at the Bridge tournament, held Dec. 5th-7th in St.Ignace. They lost in
overtime to St. Joseph’s Carpenters from Sault MI. Werner dominated
play, out-shooting their opponents in every game. The Lightning beat Ann
Arbor, Midland, and the Sault to reach the semi-finals where they again
faced Midland. They advanced to the championship game. The tournament
MVP was Matt Grisdale who buried a wicked wrister into the back of the
net with 0.7 seconds left on the clock. That sent the championship game
into overtime in which a bouncing face-off went through the five hole
of the Lightning's goalie. Other standouts were Craig Bongard with 4 goals
and 6 assists and Alli Walkley with 4 goals and 2 assists. Coach Bongard
complimented the entire team on the will to win and defensive play.
