Factors to consider when selecting the right hockey stick

Shaft Stiffness*

Super Flex (80) Most Recreational & smaller finesse players

Mid Flex (90) Strong forwards, equal wrist & slapshots

Stiff Flex (100) Defense & strong forwards, good slapshots

Pro Stiff Flex (110) Strongest players, very hard shot

* when in doubt, go with the most flexible shaft that you can manage.

Most players make the mistake of using too stiff a shaft, which is beyond

their strength and capability to maximize it’s performance. In order to

maximize performance, the player must be able to flex the shaft enough to

optimize energy transfer down the shaft and through the blade.

Blade Type

 Midcurve Traditional, best all around

Heel Curve For rising slap shots, getting puck off the ice with ease

Toe Curve Powerful shot, fast rising. Provides good accuracy.

Offset Greater release and optimizes back hand.

Blade Lie*

5 Puck farther from body, more wind up

 6 Traditional, best all around

7 Puck close to body, quick release

Senior Adult males, strong teens & women

Intermediate Adult women, youth (13-18 yrs)

 Junior Youth (<12 yrs)

Selecting a stick relative to size of player

Under 130 lbs and less than 5’2 in height

Youth players (age 7 to 12) who are less than 130 lbs and 5’2 in height should be using a junior (50 flex) stick

or shaft. Players in this category do not have the strength to use the stiffer flex of an intermediate or senior and

in order to optimize the performance from the stick, they should be using the junior product.

Under 160 lbs and 5’5 in height

At this height and weight level, the best fit would be the 70 flex intermediate. If your dealing with a strong

player that is playing competitive hockey, he/she may want to move into a 90 flex senior. In order to optimize

performance, a player at this weight and height should not use anything stronger than a 90 flex.

160 to 195 lbs and above 5’5 in height

At this height and weight, the best fit would be the 90 flex. Again, players that are playing at elite levels or

consider themselves to be above average players may want to move to the 100 flex because they have the

upper body strength to maximize performance.

195 lbs and above

In this weight class, the optimal flex would be the 100 flex. Some players that are very big and have a lot

of upper body strength will want to use the 110 flex. (rare)

Selecting the right stick is critical to comfort and improved performance.
